Meeting The Locals

We arrived at the Kingdom Hall (see photo) at 8:50 a.m. for the 9:00 a.m.service arrangement.

No, Evel Knievel was not going out in the ministry
today, but a local brother does get around on this
nifty motorbike.

Carol and I were accompanied by a Mexican sister, Marisol, who appears in the photo collage below that includes other scenes from our territory.
Marisol wanted to make a return visit on an interested person before we went to the assigned territory. We walked a distance only to learn the person had gone to work at Sam's Club. This being Mexico, we walked the short distance to Sam's Club to find her. As the saying goes, 'Things are different in Mexico.' For example, if no one responds when you call at a door it is acceptable, and sometimes successful, to call at the window.

Marisol told us of when she went to Germany to visit her son who now lives there with his German wife. An agent at the airport asked her what brought her to Germany. She explained, adding that she was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. The agent's face took on a darkly disapproving expression. Shortly afterward Marisol saw a woman weeping and went to her to ask what was wrong. The woman said she was worried about her father in Belgium, where she was going, because he had a recent heart attack. Marisol began to talk to her about the Bible and the woman said, "I'm a Witness too!" They began hugging one another and calling one another sister. The airport agent saw all this and was amazed that a Mexican woman and a woman from Belgium, obviously total strangers, should suddenly behave like long lost family. Marisol explained, "We are both Jehovah's Witnesses. That makes us sisters!"

I personally found two friendly men who spoke English and introduced them to JW.org. And in a lawyer's office I placed two magazines with the receptionist. In a hotel reception area unfortunately no one spoke English but I learned the hotel is owned by a JW.

We eventually took a break in a restaurant named Bananas, where we ordered milkshakes. The restaurant is owned by a JW family. Before leaving I took the photo below showing one of the sons who served as our waiter.

Before returning home we did a little shopping and picked up a few souvenirs in the shop pictured below. The couple shown are the owners. They are both ... you guessed it. Baptized a year ago.

  1. The Kingdom Hall is very low-key, but with great compact landscaping. Just look ... there is even a pond. Bill :-)

  2. Yes, you literally do call out very loudly at the door or window to get resident's attention. One home was for sale and the owner insisted we come on in and have a look. Too expensive for not much.
Ventura and his wife make a lot of the items in their shop. Nice mixed metals jewelry. When we got there he was reading his Bible on his iPad. He spoke some English as he had lived in Colorado number of years ago.

  3. I cried when I read the story of the two sisters meeting at the airport! One big family all around the world, how great to be a part of that
